A Spotlight on Donation

spotlight_squareThe National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin (NKFW) created Spotlight on Life in 2011. Today, it has grown to be an annual tradition between Fred Astaire Dance Studios and the NKFW of dance, collaboration, and fun-spirited competition. Spotlight on Life celebrates the lives that have been saved or enhanced through transplantation, donors who have given the gift of life, and underscores the 2,249 Wisconsin families who are still waiting for their loved ones to receive a critical life-saving transplant. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2020, 7 p.m. CST at the Marriott Milwaukee West, and will be live streamed here for those that can’t attend.

Combining dancing, rivalry, and fun, Spotlight on Life is a unique gala celebration of the gift of life. Representatives from organ procurement organizations, tissue banks, transplant hospitals, and other related organizations take professional dance lessons from FADS professionals and compete toe-to-toe on the dance floor. Guests enjoy a gourmet dinner, dance competition, and after party. Every guest has the opportunity to vote for their favorite dancer by making a donation. Every $1 donated equals 1-vote. Most votes will win the “People’s Choice” award.

What inspired you to dance at the Spotlight on Life Gala?

My daughter, Emily C Lyons is my complete inspiration.  Due to a tragic snowmobile accident, she became an organ, tissue, and cornea donor at the age of 19. She saved the lives of six people, gave sight to two others, and improved the lives of 60 people in 22 states. She is my inspiration to be a better person, make the most of every opportunity, and do my part in making the world a kinder place.

Do you have any special connection to kidney health, donation or transplant?

After Emily’s accident, my life took a completely different path. It is now my life’s mission to raise awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation. I will spend every day promoting what I see as Em’s final wish.

What is your hometown?

I was born and raised in Sheboygan. However, we moved to Beaver Dam in 1995 and have raised our children in this wonderful community.

Favorite song or artist?

I have and will always be a fan of Rod Stewart.  Anyone that knows me also laughs at my infatuation with Uncle Kracker. I have seen them both in concert six times. 😊

Music or artistic talents?

I wish I had something to list here. My father told me I should sing tenor….ten or twelve blocks away from him.  He has a great sense of humor. Also, I do occasionally play a mean tambourine.

Family/Pets:

My husband Michael and I have a beautiful blended family with seven children. Emily was the oldest and would be 24 years old. We currently have three 22-year-old daughters, Michela, Alexa, and Sally.  Emmett is 20, Kelly is 18, and John is 16. I am told I need to wait until I retire and slow down to get a dog.

Favorite free time activity?

I love road trips and traveling with my family and friends. I love singing in the car when I am alone.   I love listening to live music. I love home décor and painting. I love to embrace just about every opportunity that comes my way. I love to laugh and spend time with people that make me do so!

Alumni of what school(s)?

I received an associate degree from Madison University (formerly MATC) in Tourism and Recreation.

Professional memberships?

Chamber of Commerce Committee Board Member

Community/volunteer involvement?

I am a volunteer with Lions Eye Back of Wisconsin, an LEBW Transporter, a certified volunteer with UW Organ and Tissue Donation, a member of the Beaver Dam Lions Club,  and a public speaker at various events and drivers education classes raising awareness of organ and tissue donation.

Anything special you’d like your fans to know?

I am so scared of this event! I chose to jump out of a plane for my 50th birthday this past July and this event has me more nervous. However, with everything in my life, I am surrounded by love, the best support system, the most amazing family, friends, and co-workers ever, and a very beautiful angel that will make sure that I embrace this opportunity and have a wonderful time. I hope you enjoy it as well!
